Although considerable efforts have been made towards curing cancer, the most common cause of death in Japan, we have not yet been able to achieve the desired results of treatment, except for certain type of cancers. This implies that conventional molecular biological research and therapeutic approaches that target only single molecule is insufficient.
Since cancer is considered to be a disease that constantly evolves and becomes more robust, I believe it would be prudent to apply cutting-edge technologies from systems biology, evolutionary biology, sociobiology, and computer science to cancer research. Furthermore, it is of paramount importance to advocate new therapeutic strategies for cancer treatment.
Based on the knowledge and experience I have gained during my 20 years as a medical doctor in neurosurgery, I believe that a paradigm shift in cancer research can be achieved via breakthroughs in systems biology.
