I am interested in new modes to produce, disseminate and retrieve artistic works. In particular, I try to gain an insight in how people create and value artistic works and what role the community plays in this process. This study is a particular case of Semiotic Dynamics.

For our work, we developed Ikoru, a tagging system for photos. In contrast to existing tagging sites, Ikoru complements user tags with image analysis and classification. Ikoru serves as a platform for further experiments, for example, to study the relation between data features and tags. Ikoru also lets us observe in detail how people navigate a large archive of photos and how they build personal collections. With the insights gained from these observations, I hope to make tagging systems more intelligent and stimulate people into thinking more creatively.
