The frontier of human activity has expanded over time from land, to sea, to sky. Now Mars is the next horizon. As the population of Earth grows in the years ahead, economic and ecological factors will drive humanity to expand the spatial domain that we can routinely operate in and exploit. That expansion will have to be accompanied by the establishment of supporting communication infrastructure for those environments. That is the perspective that motivates my fundamental research and development work into exploring the possibility of harnessing light as a means of communication for wide deployment in space-based activities.
