In recent years, space development led by private companies has progressed at an unimaginable pace. As a result, the demand for both in-space and space-to-ground communication is expected to grow exponentially. The optical communications pursued in our Small Optical Link (SOL) Project offer key advantages over conventional radio frequency communication: high-speed communication, compact and lightweight system design, lower power consumption, and enhanced security due to its resistance to interception. These features are especially valuable in commercial applications, where minimizing the size and weight of onboard communication equipment is critical given the high cost of space transportation. As an optical engineer involved in the development of space telescopes, I will contribute to making in-space optical communication a part of our everyday infrastructure by leading the development of optical systems.
