Sony Computer Science Laboratories Transfers “Flow Machines” Research Outcomes to Roland Corporation

Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. (“Sony CSL”) today announced that it will transfer the research outcomes of its AI-assisted music creation project Flow Machines to Roland Corporation (“Roland”).In connection with this transition, Flow Machines Mobile, which has been provided as a research-oriented service, will be discontinued on March 18, 2026.

Flow Machines is a research project conducted at Sony CSL with the objective of augmenting the creativity of music creators. Throughout the project, Sony CSL has promoted both research and practical experimentation by making research prototypes available to creators and observing their use in real music production workflows. These real-world uses enabled technical validation as well as the identification and development of required functionalities.

To further advance the research outcomes into a product development phase, Sony CSL has decided to transfer the technology to Roland, a company with extensive expertise in musical instruments and music production product development. Roland plans to announce music production tools utilizing this technology. The transition enables the technology to be developed and delivered to creators through commercial products.
