[INFO] AI Science Communicators at Miraikan Win the 2026 Good Design Award

The AI Science Communicator initiative at Miraikan, part of “Society with AI Symbionts,” led by Research Director Shunichi Kasahara, has won the 2026 Good Design Award. The initiative explores new forms of society in which humans and AI learn from each other and grow together.

Organized by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP), the GOOD DESIGN AWARD is Japan’s only comprehensive design evaluation and promotion program. For nearly 70 years, the award and its G Mark symbol have been widely recognized as a mark of excellence in design. As design continues to expand beyond products into services, systems, and social initiatives, the GOOD DESIGN AWARD recognizes both tangible and intangible creations that are developed to realize a vision, address challenges, and contribute to a better society.

Jury’s Evaluation
This project demonstrates a new possibility for the use of AI, featuring AI avatars modeled after the Science Communicators who actively engage with visitors at the Miraikan – The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.
The initiative was highly praised not only for enabling communication with a greater number of visitors through AI avatars, but also for incorporating a design that feeds AI conversation logs back to the original Science Communicators, supporting their learning and growth.
It is an outstanding initiative unique to Miraikan, whose mission is to view science and technology as part of culture and to encourage people to think about their role in society and possibilities for the future.
