"If you want to accomplish in your life, one thing that would contribute to the future of humanity - what is that?" How do researchers at Sony CSL reflect on these questions and engage with their own research? And what kind of place is Sony Computer Science Laboratories, shaped by such individuals? Through the words of the researchers themselves, we hope to share part of that perspective.
Better societies in better environments
Our societies and environments are facing significant challenges due to their increasing complexity and the interconnection of various actors and factors. Concepts such as climate change, ecological limits, urban organization, widening global inequalities, and flaws in our information ecosystem have become commonplace. The inherent complexity of these issues and the rapid transformations they cause make it difficult to identify clear cause-and-effect relationships. This complicates our ability to guide humanity toward safer, more prosperous societies that coexist harmoniously with their ecosystems.
As both an individual and a scientist, I have developed a strong desire to contribute to addressing these pressing societal challenges. My toolkit for this endeavour includes theoretical concepts, data, and computational methods, as well as passion and dedication. I aim to use these resources to uncover the complexities within urban, social, and information ecosystems. Ultimately, my goal is to redesign their structures and functions to enhance these systems and improve our collective well-being.
